February 3, 2010 –The Ontario Library Association announced the Library Building Award recipients today. The OLA Library Building Awards were created to encourage excellence in the architectural design and planning of libraries in Ontario.
“2010 was a banner year for the awards. Each submission is judged upon its own merit rather than in competition with the others. The jury had a challenging time due to so many notable submissions. This year 10 of the 25 submissions were selected to receive an award,” commented Tanis Fink, chair, OLA Library Building Award Jury.
Award recipients are from the school, academic, and public library sector and are as follows:

The library world lost a leader this week. During his career, Alan MacDonald was a University of Calgary and Dalhousie University librarian. In 2003 he was honoured with the CARL award for distinguished research. He was well known and well respected in the library field and will be greatly missed.

CNIB Library seeks public funding to sustain service

Canada is the only G8 country that does not publicly fund library services for people who have a print disability. The CNIB's recently launched 'Right to Read' campaign focusses on securing sustainable government support and funding, while working in partnership with libraries, to ensure people with vision loss or who are otherwise print-disabled have more equitable access to reading materials.

Leona Dombrowsky moves from Agriculture to Education. Ontario Education minister Kathleen Wynne is to move to the Transportation Ministry while Aboriginal Affairs Minister Brad Duguid will be promoted to energy and infrastructure. Michael Chan moves from Citizenship and Immigration to Tourism and Culture. Aileen Carroll was the Minister of Culture.

Name change for 'The Living Library'

Name change for 'The Living Library'. Now to be called the Human Library. The concept of what is now known as the Human Library originally began 10 years ago in Denmark. A recent notification from a U.S. based company has claimed that 'The Living Library' is a registered name. The actual correct interpretation from the original Danish is Human Library - thus the name change. Read more at:

May 2009 LAC informed libraries of a short term moratorium on purchased acquisitions. A Documentary Heritage Management Framework and and Acquisition Orientation instrument was developed since to navigate the complex world of collection and archiving.
