TORONTO, ON (October 26, 2009) – The Ontario Library Association and official Wholesaler, S&B Books, are excited to reveal the short-listed nominated titles for the 2010 Forest of Reading®. All nominated titles have been posted to the Reading Program page of the OLA website, which you can visit at
http://www.accessola.com/reading.
The nominations include all categories such as the Blue Spruce™ Award (kindergarten to grade 3 age children), the Silver Birch® Awards (Express, Fiction, and Non-Fiction for grade 3 to 6 age children), the Red Maple™ Award (grade 7 and 8 age children), the White Pine™ Award (high school), Le Prix Tamarack™ (French Fiction, Non-fiction grades 3-6), the Golden Oak™ Award (adults learning to read) and the Evergreen Award (adult library patrons).
“We are looking forward to even more participation this year,” stated Shelagh Paterson, Executive Director of the Ontario Library Association. “The program is all about kids enjoying reading without any other obligations – aside from voting which the readers love doing.”
The Festival of Trees™ will be taking place this year on May 12-13, 2010 at the Harbourfront Centre for its fourth consecutive year. The Forest of Reading is comprised of five programs for children and two for adults and encourages people of all ages in their love of reading. The six children’s choice award programs (run by the Ontario Library Association) involve Ontario students reading at least five books in their grade grouping and then voting for their favourites. Schools purchase the set of books and readers have an official voting day on April 23rd. A committee of public librarians and teacher-librarians chooses the short lists across the province. The Forest of Reading Festival of Trees was created to promote recreational reading among children and young adults.
This Ontario-wide Festival of Trees will present two action-packed days of readings, award ceremonies, workshops, activities, and other exciting entertainment. This year, The Forest of Reading has seven fully operational programs, which are voted on by children, young adults and adults from across the province. More than 230, 000 readers participate each year. For the first time, the 2010 Festival will also include Le Prix Tamarack™.
