Interesting thought, eh? I was reading the article, “What’s New in Coburg, Matey” in the OLA Access magazine, when one sentence mentioned the idea of a library card with points. I stopped dead in my tracks and thought, “Well, hey! Isn’t THAT a great idea!” And so this blog entry began."

While the wheels in my mind are turning, I’m starting to think that collector points or perhaps air miles offered with the use of one’s library card is a genius idea. It seems that every other business is doing it and actually works. The same characteristics that businesses hope to obtain through these programs, mainly customer loyalty, are similar to what libraries wish to obtain, as well. Now if we were to think this through, it wouldn’t make sense for libraries to have ‘library points cards’ because there probably wouldn’t be anything of real value to redeem, since everything is technically ‘free’ anyway, but how about partnering up with outside organizations like air miles or grocery stores where the points can be redeemed there. I’m thinking this would definitely increase traffic to the library and actual use of the materials, as that would be the only way to obtain points…10 library books can equal 20 air miles! And there we have it. The issues of libraries being relevant, generating traffic and popularity are all solved. Where can I sign up??
